VP Southern Region Bio: Henry Hartman, Executive Director, STARLINK

B.A.  Education (math),The Pennsylvania State University
M.A.  Theatre Arts,The Pennsylvania State University

1990 – Present, Executive Director, STARLINK

STARLINK is the oldest satellite and Internet based professional development network in the U.S.  I have built it from a fifty college Texas consortium into a network of 177 colleges and universities in 29 states and Canada.  STARLINK is the recipient of the 2005 NCSPOD Innovation Award.  I have presented at many national and regional conferences promoting best practices for professional development.

I have been serving as the NCSPOD Southern Region V.P. since January 2008. In addition, my position as Executive Director of STARLINK puts me in the unique position of interacting with the top educators in North America on a regular basis.  I can therefore act as a conduit to bring ideas and best practices to the NCSPOD membership.  Also, I can be a resource for Southern Region campuses seeking specific experts/presenters.  I have long promoted the need for quality, continuous professional development to college administrators.  This will continue to be one of my key goals.  In addition, I believe in the value of collaboration/cooperation; it is one of the cornerstones of STARLINK. A strong NCSPOD with engaged members can certainly provide the leadership to raise the level of professional development programs throughout North America..  Therefore, I will bring my skills and knowledge gained from the STARLINK Network and serving as the Southern Region VP to encourage and expand NCSPOD membership, especially in the southern Region.

I have a wonderful wife of 25 years and two great boys (men now) 18 and 17.  As most parents I can talk about them for hours but here is a quick synopsis.  Chris is thespian and planning on studying drams at the University of Oklahoma.  Ethan is a varsity lacrosse player (yep he likes to hit people with a stick) and does the technical side of theatre.

Right now my major avocation is playing jazz saxophone.  I also love to ski but (ha, ha) pretty hard in Dallas since it’s prairie and snows about half an inch a year.

I’ve been involved in higher education professional development for almost 20 years now and my two biggest concerns are that  it’s funding is one of the first things to be eliminated when things are financial tough at a college . Secondly, I wish that more college presidents would pay more than just lip service to training their faculty and staff.

Staff and faculty need to be given the incentive and time to continually upgrade their skills.  I’d like NCSPOD to become a strong enough voice to get a viable professionals development department in all of the colleges.

This year I hope to get a blog on the NCSPOD web site for the Southern region.  Webinars are another possibility if members are interested in providing the topics and training.
